We once chased down a guy who robbed a CVS at gunpoint. (From a safe distance, didn’t want to get shot) He wasn’t even driving fast. We just tailed him long enough that we could get a full plate number and a perfect description of the car. They managed to catch the guy the next day due to our description and accurate plate number.

That’s how I’d do it. Follow only long enough to get a plate number and what the car is (second part is easier for an Oppo) then leave the real chasing to the cops. But if it ever happened to me, who knows? Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

I saw that a few days ago. Chasing stolen cars is about the dumbest thing you can do.

“Hey, let’s follow this car around with absolutely no plan on what to do after that, k?”

We shall follow them, because reasons and we’re driving a fast fart can car; we’re the only ones that can do it.

Just a few seconds into that video, my heart started pounding. The excitement reminded me of the chase that I was involved in.

I assume that the private call muted in the video was to the cops. I spent the rest of the video wondering why I wasn’t hearing him relay information to the police. I’m amazed that they spotted it coming back through the same area so that they could resume the chase.

A few notes on pursuit:

Following can be safe, IF you’re very careful not to let them know you’re onto them. I can’t stress this enough. Keeping your distance helps. Staying in the same lane was a bad idea, even at a distance. The driver should have merged back to the right after passing the other cars. You do not need to be in the same lane to follow.

Get the cops involved as early as possible. The driver was smart to confirm with the owner first, but he should have dialed the police IMMEDIATELY after. Get them the plate number and let the cops take over ASAP.

Speeding- avoid it if you can, but remember that you’re really taking your life into your own hands if you do. Cops will not endorse it, and will advise against it. They may even ask over the phone if you are speeding...

Not letting the thief know you’re onto them is key here. High speeds make everything worse. It’s hard to track them. It’s hard for the cops to track them. They might hit something. YOU might hit something. Something might hit either of you. Keep in mind that the thief does NOT care about the condition of the stolen property as much as you do.

Tunnel vision- don’t fall into this trap. There may or may not be other traffic around you (or pedestrians!) Another reason not to speed.

Pursuit at night gives you an opportunity to turn off your headlamps. It’s not a good idea, but it *can* work in your favor. Automatic “always-on” running lamps might spoil the illusion, though...

BEST CASE SCENARIO:

They never notice you following and everyone travels at normal speed. You call the cops and keep feeding them information until they arrive. The perp is arrested, end of story.

You WANT the chase to be over with quickly and you WANT to end up with a really boring story to tell about it.

All I can say is, kill your local car thief.

I often think, as an Opponaut, no one could ever tail me. I scan/recognize cars way too quickly for me to miss anyone for too long haha

I think I would do the same thing.

I would follow, and call the police and tell them that I am following a stolen car and tell them my location. If the police say, “thank you, please stop following” then I will. I will not engage the driver of the stolen car.

I would like to think the police would use my location and my updates to come find us and pull the stolen car over, but that’s probably because I watch too much TV.

Why is it that civilians can have these incredibly clear dash cams, yet most of the police dash cam footage seems like it was taken by a ten year old cell phone camera with Vaseline on the lense?

Same can also be said for most security camera footage.

I got in a chase like that once. Except I was the one trying to escape. I attributed the cause to road rage once I escaped. I literally thought this redneck was going to pull out a gun and kill me if I stopped.

Because police dash cams were purchased years ago, and they didn’t get new ones yet?

Fair enough. But, shouldn’t they? Wouldn’t it be in everyone’s best interest? Well, assuming that you don’t have a officer who beats people on camera, of course.

They work, they record video, and they’re likely referred to only rarely. No point in investing until new ones are needed. You don’t need 1080i to watch a traffic stop.

That is part of their job, I think.
